JAMES EPPERSON: And he's been in practice about 30 years and I've been practicing approximately 20 years.

BILL WHITTAKER: We try to explain that every domestic action is very emotional and to try to take it out of that atmosphere by being kind, understanding but forceful with regard to what the issues really are. You need to understand what the law actually is as opposed to what you want the law to be.

JAMES EPPERSON: They need to see a different perspective other than the one that they're living. And it's not a very good or happy experience for them and they need someone to bounce ideas off of. We need bounce ideas off the client so that they have some third party view because a judge who may end up making the decision may make a decision that they have no idea why he made it.

BILL WHITTAKER: In North Carolina, you can only get divorced upon a year's separation. And all that means is becoming unmarried. All other actions, such as child custody, support, alimony and property settlement, which we call equitable distribution are taken care of, hopefully, prior to the filing of divorce.
