Paul Casey falls short in dramatic playoff at Omega European Masters

At the 2026 Omega European Masters, golf fans witnessed a thrilling contest that went to a fourth playoff hole as Paul Casey, the 49-year-old Englishman, conceded victory to South Africa's Thriston Lawrence. Lawrence won with a birdie on the fourth playoff hole, after the two players made par on the first three. This is Lawrence's sixth DP World Tour title and his third win at this event, equaling the record of the legendary Seve Ballesteros. Lawrence said in his delight: "This is probably the most emotional I've been on a golf course. I fought so hard today. I gave it my everything. I feel for Paul; he played great golf and it looked like it was his all day." Paul Casey, who currently plays for LIV Golf, had an emotional and turbulent day. After the third round, Casey led by three shots and had pledged to donate all his prize money to charities associated with the devastating fire in Crans-Montana in January, which killed 40 people and injured more than 115. From the start of the final round, Casey showed signs of tension, having to use one hand to recover from poor tee shots on holes 2 and 3. He scrambled well for par on the second but bogeyed the third. Gradually regaining his composure, Casey birdied the 4th and created a tight battle. However, his rivals were relentless in their pursuit. Angel Hidalgo made five consecutive birdies to move within one shot of Casey, and Patrick Reed also exploded with four birdies in his opening six holes. But a costly double-bogey on the 7th dashed Reed's chances. Lawrence, meanwhile, played brilliantly with eight birdies and no bogeys, carding a 62 to finish with a total of 18 under par and taking the clubhouse lead while Casey was still out on the course. Notably, Casey had a dark moment on the 6th hole when his approach shot went out of bounds, leading to a double-bogey. Despite that, he remained calm and even took part in a live TV interview right after, laughing about his mishap. After those turbulent moments, Casey regained his composure and made four birdies in five holes from the 11th, moving into a one-shot lead late in the round. However, on the 18th, he only needed a par to win, but his approach shot came up short, landing in the water, forcing him to bogey and enter a playoff. After four dramatic playoff holes, Lawrence made the decisive birdie to claim victory, while Casey, despite missing out on the title, left the image of a fighter full of emotion and humanity. With his prize money of $412,500 from the total purse of $3.75 million, Casey will fulfill his promise to donate it all to the fire victims in Crans-Montana. The defeat may hurt, but his spirit of giving back to the community is commendable. Notably, with LIV Golf's future uncertain, Casey could rejoin the DP World Tour as a member for 2027. He turns 50 in late July next year and would become eligible for the PGA Tour Champions.
