Isle of Wight: Presentation Evening, four-division Winter League and a positive signal from 16 young players

On September 4, the Isle of Wight Table Tennis Association held its annual Presentation Evening in a warm community atmosphere. Mike Turner, a Division One player in the local winter league, presented trophies to champions and runners-up from the association’s competitions over the past 12 months. Chairman Alex Rorke thanked the organizers and stressed the long-term development of table tennis on the island. The new winter league, due to start in early October, will feature four divisions. More notably, 16 players under 16 have registered to take part. For a small island association, this is a positive signal for youth participation. But these young players need a well-structured pathway, not just a single season of enthusiasm. The association also confirmed it will send a team of eight players to the International Island Games in the Faroe Islands at the end of the season. The trip offers a rare international experience. In addition, Alex Rorke thanked Pat Thorley, Paul Cates, Tim Giles and Peter Clarke for their organizational work. The real question now is whether the 16 juniors remain engaged throughout the winter season. Sustainable development depends on clear competition systems and committed local volunteers. The event on September 4 was a modest but meaningful foundation.
